How to Verify Signal Without Your Personal Number
There's a pleasant irony in the world's privacy messenger requiring your phone number. Signal uses it as your account identity — but nothing forces it to be your number. If you want Signal's privacy without attaching your personal line, a temporary number handles registration.
Why separate Signal from your real number
- Contacts discovery. Signal notifies contacts who have your number. A separate line means nobody gets "X joined Signal" pinged to their phone.
- Identity separation. Journalists, activists, and privacy-conscious users often need a Signal identity disconnected from their real-world one.
- A clean second line. Separate Signal for work, sources, or a group you don't want tied to you.
Step by step
- Top up on Micro OTP — from $1, card/MoMo/crypto.
- Search "Signal" in the service grid, pick a number country — "Best available" works.
- Enter the number in Signal's registration flow (country code included).
- Copy the SMS code from your order page into Signal.
Signal occasionally offers a voice-call fallback — the SMS path is the more reliable one for temporary numbers.
The Signal-specific step: Registration Lock
This matters more here than anywhere. After registering:
- Settings → Account → Registration Lock → ON. This requires your Signal PIN to re-register the number — without it, whoever next holds that recycled number could attempt to register it.
- Set a strong Signal PIN — it's also your account's anchor. Signal will periodically ask for it.
- Turn on disappearing messages and privacy settings as you like — the number is the only identity link left, and Registration Lock controls it.
This isn't optional caution: numbers get recycled back into pools. Registration Lock is what makes that irrelevant to you.
What the number limits
- No number reuse for recovery. Signal account = number + PIN. The PIN carries everything after registration.
- If you reinstall, Signal re-registers the number — which no longer exists for you. Registration Lock + PIN keeps the account data, but a full re-registration would need the number's SMS again — which is why some users keep a long-term number for a permanent Signal identity.
For most people using Signal as a private second line, the temporary number + Registration Lock combination is the right tool — just understand you're holding the PIN, not the number.
Cost
Under a dollar typically, shown before you pay — no code, no charge if the SMS never arrives. The same flow covers Telegram and every other messenger in the grid.
