Using Your US-Number WhatsApp on Web, Desktop & Linked Devices
Verified WhatsApp on a US number and want it on your laptop, tablet, or a second device? Good news: WhatsApp's linked-devices system works entirely off the account, not the number — once you're verified, the +1 is just the account's ID and every device connects the same way.
How linked devices actually work
- The phone is the primary. Your WhatsApp app holds the account; linked devices attach to it via QR code.
- Up to 4 linked devices + 1 phone — web.whatsapp.com, the desktop apps, tablets, all counted together.
- No number re-verification needed. Linked devices authenticate by QR scan — the temporary number's expiry doesn't affect them at all.
Setting it up
- Open WhatsApp on the phone → Settings → Linked devices.
- On the second device: web.whatsapp.com (browser) or install the WhatsApp Desktop app.
- Scan the QR code with the phone — the device links in seconds.
- Chats sync; the linked device now works independently — even while the phone's offline (for up to ~2 weeks of inactivity).
What this means for a US-number account
- The +1 was only needed once — at signup. Linked devices never see the number again.
- The account is portable — new laptop, new tablet: just link and go.
- The PIN is the real key — the temporary number expired; your two-step PIN + recovery email are what matter if you ever re-register on a new phone. (Set those up if you haven't)
Multi-phone use — WhatsApp now supports it
Recent WhatsApp versions let you link a second phone as a companion device — same account, two phones:
- On the second phone: install WhatsApp, choose "Link as companion device" instead of logging in fresh.
- Scan its QR from the primary phone's Linked devices screen.
- Both phones share the account — chats, calls, everything.
This is how you run a US-number account across a work phone and a personal one without a second SIM — no number needed on the companion device at all.
The honest limits
- The primary phone still matters. If you lose it and the account isn't PIN/email-anchored, recovering on a new primary phone requires re-verifying — which an expired number can't do. Anchor the account.
- Linked devices expire after ~14 days of phone-offline — keep the primary phone's WhatsApp opening periodically.
- No independent login. A linked device can't exist without the primary account — it's an extension, not a clone.
Two US-number accounts, one laptop?
Yes — WhatsApp Web/Desktop sessions can run in different browser profiles or the desktop app + browser simultaneously; each links to its own primary. (The second-account setup)
Cost reminder: the verification was under a dollar — everything after it (linking, syncing, multi-device) is WhatsApp's own free feature. No code, no charge on any verification that fails, always.
