How to Switch Your Existing WhatsApp to a US Number
Your WhatsApp is on your local number, but you want it on a US one — for business credibility, privacy, or because you're relocating. The good news: WhatsApp's Change Number feature migrates your account — chats, groups, profile, everything — to the new number. You don't lose a thing.
The catch: Change Number needs you to verify the new number with an SMS — and a temporary US number handles exactly that step.
What Change Number does
- Moves everything — chat history, groups, starred messages, settings, profile.
- Notifies your chats — individual chats and groups get a "this person changed their number" notice (you can control who sees it).
- Keeps the account — same account, same history, new ID. Not a fresh start.
Before you start
- Be on the old account — Change Number runs inside your existing WhatsApp, on the old number.
- Back up first — Settings → Chats → Chat backup. Migration is reliable, but a backup costs nothing.
- Have the new number ready — the verification window is short; don't start without it.
Step by step
- Top up on Micro OTP — about $1, by card or crypto.
- Pick "WhatsApp" in the service grid, choose United States — a +1 number is assigned.
- In WhatsApp: Settings → Account → Change Number → enter your old number, then the new +1 number.
- WhatsApp sends the verification code to the new number — read it on your order page, enter it.
- The account migrates instantly — every chat now lives on the +1.
If the code stalls, cancel the order (auto-refund) and take a different number before proceeding — no code, no charge, and Change Number simply waits.
What your contacts see
- Groups — automatic notice in every group you share.
- Individual chats — you choose: notify all contacts, only chats you've messaged, or custom. Anyone you don't notify keeps your old number in their phone and won't find the new one.
After migrating — the safety setup
The +1 is a temporary number: it verified the switch and expired. Make the account permanent:
- Two-step verification (Settings → Account): set a PIN — your way back in on a new device.
- Recovery email — add one you'll check.
The account now runs on a number that no longer exists anywhere except as your WhatsApp ID. That's fine — WhatsApp doesn't need it again unless you fully re-verify, and your PIN + email cover the recovery paths that matter.
When NOT to do this
- If you need the old number's incoming calls/texts — they still go to whoever owns that line.
- If you might need SMS re-verification someday — understand that the expired number can't provide it; the PIN + email setup is non-negotiable.
