Temporary Number vs. eSIM vs. Second SIM — What's Right for Verification?

When you need a number for verification, you've got four options — and three of them are massive overkill for what's actually a 5-minute job. Here's how they really compare.

The four options

Temporary verification number. Rent a real SIM-backed number for minutes, receive one SMS, done. Purpose-built for exactly this task — that's what Micro OTP sells.

A second physical SIM. A real number you keep. Works for everything, but you're buying a permanent asset for a one-time need — plus registration requirements and keeping it active forever.

An eSIM plan. Same as a second SIM but no physical card — still a monthly-ish commitment, carrier signup, and a number you maintain.

VoIP apps (TextNow, Google Voice, etc.). Free or cheap US numbers — that get rejected by WhatsApp, Google, and most serious platforms. The number itself works; the acceptance doesn't.

Side by side

Temp number Second SIM eSIM VoIP app
Time to working number ~2 minutes Days (registration) Hours Minutes
Cost for one verification Under $1 $10+ ongoing $10+/month Free–cheap
Accepted by WhatsApp/Google Yes (SIM-backed) Yes Yes Usually no
Ongoing responsibility None Keep it active Keep it active Keep it active
Good for long-term recovery No Yes Yes Yes (if kept)

The pattern: everything except a temporary number is a long-term commitment you're making to solve a one-time problem.

When each actually wins

Temporary number — one-off verifications: app signups, second accounts, platform checks, marketplace registrations. The job is over the moment the code lands.

Second SIM / eSIM — a number you'll use repeatedly: a permanent business line, an ongoing recovery number, regular international calls. If you need it next month too, own it.

VoIP app — casual texting and calling where verification isn't involved. Acceptable utility, terrible for OTP.

The mistake that matters most

Whichever you choose for verification, don't make the number your account's only lifeline. A temporary number expires in minutes — so after signup, immediately add a recovery email and app-based 2FA to any account you're keeping. The number does the verification; email and 2FA do the surviving.

And a related one: bank OTPs go to your registered number — no temporary number can catch those. Signup-time verification is the use case; existing-account security codes aren't. (More on that distinction.)

The bottom line

Match the tool to the job size. Verifying a WhatsApp account is a one-SMS task — a second SIM for that is like buying a car to drive to one appointment. Rent the number, get the code, move on. If the SMS never lands, you're refunded automatically anyway.
