Selling on Facebook Marketplace in Cameroon — Verify the Account, Keep Your Number Private
For all the talk of Jumia, most Cameroonian e-commerce actually happens on Facebook — Marketplace listings, buy-and-sell groups, the endless "serious buyers only" posts. Every seller account starts with a phone verification, and every listing you post puts your contact details in front of strangers who will absolutely use them.
The number problem on Marketplace
- Your profile is public-facing. Interested buyers expect to reach you — but "call me on WhatsApp" in a public listing means your real number is now in every scraper and scammer's database.
- The scam texts come fast. "Is this available?" followed by the fake-payment screenshot, the MoMo reversal trick, the "send me the code" buyer — all of it starts with your number.
- Multiple stores need multiple accounts. Different product lines or a business page separate from personal Facebook need separate verifications.
How to verify a Facebook account
- Top up on Micro OTP — MTN MoMo or Orange Money, from about 600 FCFA.
- Pick "Facebook" in the service grid and choose a number country — "Best available" picks the strongest route.
- Enter the number on Facebook's verification screen, request the code, read it on your order page.
Two minutes, verified, and the account's phone identity is a number that expires — not yours.
Selling-safety habits that matter more than the number
- Handle chats in-platform first. Move to WhatsApp only with real buyers — and ideally a business line, not your personal one. (Second WhatsApp setup for Cameroon)
- Know the MoMo scam scripts — fake payment screenshots, "sent too much, refund the difference", "confirm with the code I just sent you". That code is your OTP — never read it to anyone. (The full scam playbook)
- Anchor the account properly — real email, app-2FA enabled. The temporary number expires in minutes; your shop needs recovery that outlives it.
Facebook-specific catches
- Meta filters hard. Some numbers get refused before an SMS is sent — cancel (auto-refund) and take another. Different country routes deliver differently.
- Re-verification happens. Facebook periodically re-checks accounts — which is why email + authenticator 2FA matters from day one.
- Marketplace and personal account verify independently. Each new account = one verification, one number.
Cost
Under a dollar per verification, in FCFA, from a MoMo top-up that takes seconds — less than one transport fare to meet a no-show buyer. No code, no charge if the SMS never lands.
