Using Dating Apps in Nigeria Without Giving Out Your Real Number

Dating apps ask for your phone number at signup, then — depending on the app — can share it with matches, use it for "find contacts you know", or leak it in the next data breach. If you're dating online in Lagos, Abuja, or anywhere else, there's a smarter way to handle the verification step.

The case for a separate number

  • Safety first. Your number leads to your real identity, address patterns, and other accounts. Strangers from apps shouldn't have it by default.
  • Harassment containment. If a match turns unpleasant, blocking them inside the app doesn't stop someone who already has your number.
  • Data breaches. Dating apps get breached; a number that isn't yours isn't a thread that leads anywhere.
  • A clean restart. New account, new number — no baggage.

How to verify on Micro OTP

  1. Top up — from about $1 (~₦1,500), by bank card via hosted checkout or crypto.
  2. Pick the app — Tinder, Bumble, and others are in the service grid.
  3. Choose a country for the number — "Best available" works fine; the number's country doesn't need to match yours.
  4. Enter it on the app's verification screen, request the code, and copy it from your order page.

Verified. Your real number never touched the app.

The honest catches

Some apps re-verify. Tinder in particular occasionally re-asks for verification after suspicious activity or new-device logins. Mitigate it:

  • Attach a real email to the account where the app allows it.
  • Keep login behavior normal — rapid device/IP switching is what triggers re-verification.
  • If the app demands SMS re-verification on a number that's expired, support is the path — which is why the email backup matters.

Recycled numbers. Temporary numbers get reused across the market. Occasionally one was used on the same app before — if the app says the number is taken, cancel (auto-refund) and take another. Free fix.

Photo/selfie verification is separate. Apps that ask for video selfies verify you, not the number — a temporary number doesn't interfere either way.

A habit worth building

Whatever app you're on:

  • Keep chats in-app until trust is earned.
  • Turn off "share my contacts"/discovery-by-number features in settings.
  • Remember that the person on the other end can see everything your number reveals — which is exactly why they're on a temporary one.

What it costs

Under a dollar per verification, paid from a small topped-up balance. If the code doesn't arrive, the order refunds automatically — no code, no charge. The same flow works for every app in the grid; see our general dating-app verification guide for Tinder and Bumble specifics.
